From the West Alabama Newsroom--  City leaders in Selma create a new entertainment district to help promote tourism and downtown revitalization.

The city council passed the ordinance establishing the entertainment district Tuesday night. The entertainment district includes the Riverfront Park area -- and Water Avenue -- from Church Street to Martin Luther King Street.

Alcoholic beverages bought within the entertainment district can be carried around in an open container -- and consumed outside between the hours of 4 P-M and 2:30 A-M.

Dianne Smitherman is the co-owner of Sideporch Sandwiches & Pub on Water Avenue. "I think its very ambitious of the council, for that I applaud them," said Smitherman. "This has been in the works and ideas of the city government for many years."

City officials say the ordinance becomes official after its advertised in the local paper.
