Selma City Council Halts Work on Civil War Statue

By CBS 8 News

The Selma City Council has voted to stop construction on a new monument in honor of a Civil War general.

The council voted Tuesday night to stop all work on the monument to Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest until the courts decide whether the city or a Confederate heritage group owns the cemetery property where the monument would be located.

The vote came after a group of protesters marched to City Hall. Their leader, activist Rose Toure, says Forrest was an early leader of the Ku Klux Klan.

Several supporters of the Forrest monument stood by during the protest, but declined comment.

A similar monument disappeared from the cemetery earlier this year.
