From the West Alabama Newsroom-- The Selma Police Department creates a new crime unit that will focus exclusively on investigating sexual crimes.
Police Chief William Riley says the creation of the Special Victims Unit - is about putting resources and manpower in a specific area of need.
Riley says a significant drop in overall crime in the city has allowed the police department to focus more attention on sex crimes.
"That allows us to shift some resources and manpower to concentrate on these sexual crimes these crimes are horrible when you have children and our women that are victims of these type of crimes," said Riley.
He said the new unit will also focus on making sure convicted sex offenders living in the area are properly registered.
