By George McDonald

From the CBS 8 West Alabama Newsroom-- A new Postal Service strategy to keep convenient mail service in small rural towns comes to Wilcox County.

The U.S. Postal Service has opened a Village Post Office at McWilliams Kountry Mart.

In a village post office-- an existing business contracts with the Postal Service to sell postal products-- and also serves as a pick up site for mail carriers.

Postal officials say it allows them to provide convenient mail service in small rural communities-- without the expense of operating a post office.

"So, they don't have to drive very far it's right here in their neighborhoods, that convenience of being able to drop off their package and then buy postage stamps, products and services for the post office," said USPS official Bridgett Carroll.

The McWilliams Village post Office is the second V-P-O to open up in the state of Alabama.
