Auburn Celebrates 100th Homecoming

By Ashley Thompson

The Auburn Tigers will take on the Western Carolina Catamounts in Jordan Hare Stadium tomorrow for their homecoming game.

You may hear a few more 'War Eagles' this weekend as students and fans at Auburn observe homecoming. Banners and signs line the streets. Alumni come from all over the country to watch parades, enjoy concerts, and take part in anything that relates to Orange and Blue.

Friends and alumni Fradressa Whittenburg and Kathy Simpson say they never miss an Auburn homecoming.

"We tour the buildings, we go to Friday luncheons, we go to the lecture series and we sit and watch the crowd, which we are enjoying very much," says Whittenburg.

Simpson says the football team's recent success has made celebrating more fun this year and she credits Head Coach Gus Malzahn for turning things around.

"Well coach Malzahn, I think just came in and he's a great motivator," she says. "He brought in some great coaches and he's really got the crowd in it."

Others agree that morale on campus appears to be at a high this season.

"Everyone seems really pumped about the game and everything," says student Michael Blue.

Maybe that's why school officials are allowing fans to go on the football field after the homecoming game to take pictures and explore.

"That's pretty amazing," says fan Phillip Sparks. "Hopefully nobody gets hurt but it's going to be pretty crazy. That many people on the field at that time."

Friday, a parade rolled through campus, complete with floats, homecoming nominees, and dancers. Before the game on Saturday, a food festival will be held at AG Heritage Park. Tickets are $5 and the event is open to everyone. But most fans tell us they're most looking forward to the big matchup.

"Auburn has had a much better season than most seasons so I'm feeling pretty confident about it," says student Beau Tesney.

"We will go to the game and we hope that it's 60 to nothing by halftime and we'll see the band and maybe get out on that field," says Whittenburg.

Gametime is set for 1PM.
