Auburn women's basketball coach Nell Fortner is resigning after the season.

Fortner said in a statement Tuesday that she has coached for 28 years and wants "to pursue something different" after several months of consideration.

She has gone 143-105 in eight seasons at Auburn.

Fortner was named the Southeastern Conference coach of the year after leading Auburn to its first SEC regular season title in 20 years in 2008-09, while posting a 30-4 record and 12-2 league mark.

She made back-to-back NCAA tournament appearances. Fortner  was head coach of the WNBA's Indiana Fever from 2001-03 and the U.S. Women's National team that won a gold medal at the 2000 Olympics.

The Tigers finish the regular season at home against Alabama Thursday and Mississippi Sunday.
