CBS 8 Sports Analyst John Longshore was on CBS 8 News at 10:00 to offer his insight on how new Auburn head football coach Gus Malzahn measures up to his SEC competition.
First, Longshore says Malzahn was not Auburn's first choice for the job, and perhaps not even the second. He calls Malzahn a "comfort hire", who will have to face Bama's Nick Saban, LSU's Les Miles and Arkansas' new coach Bret Bielema, who was hired from Wisconsin where he won three consecutive Rose Bowls.
In comparison, Longshore notes Malzahn has been a head coach for one season, winning the Sun Belt title at Arkansas State. But Malzahn was offensive coordinator at Auburn for the 2010 BCS National Championship year, helping guide Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Cam Newton and the Tigers' spread offense.
