Canada wins 1-0 at Cuba in World Cup qualifying

Olivier Occean scored in the 55th minute, leading Canada to a 1-0 win over Cuba at Havana on Friday in the opening game of the semifinal round of World Cup qualifying in North and Central America and Caribbean.

Ocean got Canada's goal on a header off a cross from David Edgar.

The Canadians played a man short after goalkeeper Lars Hirschfeld was given a red card in the 64th minute for handling the ball outside his penalty area.

In the other Group C match, Honduras hosted Panama. In other late games, the United States hosted Antigua and Barbuda and Guatemala was at Jamaica in Group A, and Mexico hosted Guyana and El Salvador was at Costa Rica in Group B. The top two teams in each group advance to next year's regional finals.

In Asia, Keisuke Honda scored a hat trick as Japan routed Jordan 6-0, and Australia stumbled to a 0-0 draw against Oman. South Korea routed 2022 World Cup host Qatar 4-1, and Lebanon and Uzbekistan drew 1-1.
