New-look Lakers don't mesh...NBA champions play like it
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Adding Dwight Howard and Steve Nash in the offseason did not translate into an opening night victory for the new-look L.A. Lakers. Darren Collison scored 17 and the Dallas Mavericks placed six players in double figures and whacked the Lakers 99-91 last night.
MIAMI (AP) — The NBA champion Miami Heat opened the 2012-13 season just the way they ended last season -- winning. Dwyane (dwayn) Wade poured in 29 and LeBron James added 26 points and 10 rebounds in the Heat's 120-107 win over Boston.
CLEVELAND (AP) — The Cleveland Cavaliers opened a 16-point lead in the third quarter and coasted by the Washington Wizards 94-84 in the first game last night. Kyrie Irving scored 29 points and Anderson Varejao (VA'-reh-zhoh) had a career-high 23 rebounds.
BROOKLYN (AP) — The Nets' first game at their new Brooklyn home against the crosstown-rival Knicks on Thursday could be in jeopardy. The new arena is heavily dependent on mass transit and New York City subways and commuter rail are out in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.
UNDATED (AP) __ The Baltimore Orioles were the only team with three Gold Glove winners -- first-time winner shortstop J.J. Hardy, center fielder Adam Jones and catcher Matt Wieters (WEE'-turz). Pittsburgh center fielder Andrew McCutchen, San Diego third baseman Chase Headley and Oakland right fielder Josh Reddick also were first-time Gold Glove winners.
