Lakers win for Bickerstaff...UConn opens post-Calhoun era
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Lakers reacted to the firing of coach Mike Brown in a very positive way. In their most spirited game of the season, Kobe Bryant scored 27 and the Lakers beat Golden State 101-77 for interim coach Bernie Bickerstaff after Brown was sacked following a 1-4 start.
ATLANTA (AP) — LeBron James scored 21 points, including the clinching jumper with 13.6 seconds remaining, and Miami knocked off the Atlanta Hawks 95-89 for the Heat's fourth straight win. Chris Bosh led Miami with 24 points. James added 11 rebounds and nine assists.
RAMSTEIN AIR BASE, GERMANY (AP) — Shabazz Napier scored 25 points and Connecticut upset No. 14 Michigan State 66-62 last night in the Armed Forces Classic, Kevin Ollie's first game as the Huskies' head coach since replacing the retired Jim Calhoun. UConn led most of the way and by as many as 16 in the games played in a hangar at the United States' Ramstein Air Base in Germany.
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Indiana athletic director Fred Glass announced last night that the school had signed coach Tom Crean to a two-year contract extension that will keep him with the Hoosiers through 2020. Indiana, ranked No. 1 in the preseason poll for the first time in 33 years, won its 28th straight home opener by mauling Bryant 97-54 behind Cody Zeller's 18 points and 10 rebounds.
AVONDALE, Ariz. (AP)__ Brad Keselowski, who trails Jimmie Johnson by seven points with two races left in the Chase for the Sprint Cup Championship, will start 14th in Sunday's race outside Phoenix. Johnson will start in the 24th slot, well back of pole-sitter Kyle Busch.
