NEW ORLEANS (AP) — New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton has signed a five-year contract extension that will run through the 2017 season. The team Wednesday announced the extension but did not release details. Payton had agreed to the deal in principle on Dec. 29.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Marshall Henderson scored a career-high 32 points Wednesday night as Mississippi defeated Tennessee 92-74 in the Southeastern Conference opener for both teams, giving the Rebels their first road victory over the Volunteers in 22 years. Mississippi had lost 11 straight times to Tennessee in Knoxville since a 93-88 triumph on Feb. 27, 1991.
STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) — Craig Sword scored 18 points, Roquez Johnson added 14 and Mississippi State edged South Carolina 56-54 Wednesday in the Southeastern Conference opener for both teams. Mississippi State first-year coach Rick Ray won his SEC debut. Sword shot 6 of 11 from the field and had a dunk with 26 seconds left that provided enough separation for the victory.
