Defending champion Zambia eliminated

NELSPRUIT, South Africa (AP) — Defending champion Zambia failed to advance past the first round of the African Cup of Nations when it was held to a 0-0 tie by Burkina Faso on Tuesday night.

Burkina Faso (1-0-2) won Group C on goal difference and advanced along with Nigeria (1-0-2), which beat Ethiopia 2-0 in Rustenburg.

Victor Moses converted penalty kicks in the 80th and 90th minutes for the Super Eagles, who won the tournament in 1994. Moses was brought down by defender Alula Girma for the first penalty kick, then was fouled by goalkeeper Sisay Bancha, who was given a red card. Because Ethiopia had used all three substitutions, midfielder Addis Hintsa finished in goal.

Zambia (0-0-3) finished third in the group and Ethiopia (0-2-1), the 1962 winner, was last.
