Wichita, Syracuse reach Final Four...UCLA gets Alford...Pens win again

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Ninth seed Wichita State has moved into the Final Four of the NCAA men's basketball tournament by stunning No. 2 Ohio State 70-66. Malcolm Armstead scored 14 points and Fred Van Vleet added 12, including a huge basket with a minute left after the Shockers blew most of a 20-point lead. Wichita State next plays the winner of Sunday's game between Louisville and Duke.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Syracuse is in the Final Four for the first time in a decade after James Southerland scored 16 points to lead the Orange to a 55-39 smothering of Marquette. Syracuse allowed the Golden Eagles to shoot just 23 percent from the field, including 3-for-24 from three-point range. The Orange will take on Sunday's winner between Florida and Michigan.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — UCLA has hired Steve Alford as men's basketball coach, luring him from New Mexico days after he signed a new 10-year deal with the Lobos. Bruins athletic director Dan Guerrero says Alford is "the perfect fit for UCLA" because he connects with a new generation of players and brings an up-tempo and team-oriented style of play to Westwood. Alford was 155-52 in six years at New Mexico, including a 29-6 mark this season.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Penguins picked up their 15th victory but finished a 2-0 shutout over the New York Islanders without the services of Sidney Crosby. The Pens' team captain and Hart Trophy candidate took a puck in the mouth during the first period, losing several teeth and needing oral surgery. Matt Cooke and James Neal scored third period goals to pull the Penguins within two of tying the NHL record for consecutive wins set by the 1992-93 Pens.

HUMBLE, Texas (AP) — Stewart Cink (sink) and Bill Haas are tied for the lead through three rounds of the PGA's Houston Open. Haas fired a 5-under 67 for an 11-under total that ties him with Cink, who hasn't won since edging Tom Watson for the 2009 British Open title. Steve Wheatcroft, Ben Crane, D.A. Points and Jason Kokrak are one shot back.
