UConn champs...Masters tomorrow...Knicks clinch
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Geno Auriemma (aw-ree-EH'-muh) is now tied with Pat Summitt for the most women's basketball titles in NCAA history. Auriemma's Connecticut Huskies rolled to a 93-60 rout of Louisville for its eighth championship. Louisville was trying to become just the second school to win both the men's and women's championship in the same season and the first since UConn in 2004. The men's team beat Michigan Monday night.
AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — One more day of prep work is ahead for those in the field at the Masters. With Tiger Woods looking like he's back on his game, he can focus again on catching up to Jack Nicklaus, who has the record for most major championships, 18. Tiger Woods has won 14 majors. His last title was at the U.S. Open in 2008. He last won the Masters in 2005.
NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Knicks celebrated their first Atlantic Division title in nearly 20 years last night, a goal they've discussed since training camp, then quickly turned their attention to their future plans. The Knicks' goals include earning the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference, extending their 13-game winning streak, beating Chicago for the first time this season, and then chasing, as J.R. Smith called it, "that gold ball," winning the NBA championship.
UNDATED (AP) — A person familiar with negotiations has confirmed Joe Mihalich (MEH'-ah-lihk) is leaving Niagara University to become Hofsta's men's basketball coach. Mihalich would replace Mo Cassara, who was fired last month after a 7-25 season and after four Hofstra players were arrested in December on burglary charges stemming from dormitory room break-ins.
NYON, Switzerland (AP) — The Union of European Football Associations is ordering Dynamo Kiev to play a European club competition soccer match next season in an empty stadium because of "racist conduct by supporters." Fans of the Ukrainian club allegedly displayed racism during two home games last year. UEFA says a second stadium closure will be imposed if there is a repeat incident during a three-year probationary period. The club is appealing the sanction.
