JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Five players are finalists for the C Spire Ferriss Trophy, an award that goes to the top college baseball player in Mississippi. Delta State's pitcher John Branstetter, Mississippi catcher Stuart Turner, Southern Miss pitcher Andrew Pierce, Mississippi State outfielder/designated hitter Hunter Renfroe and Ole Miss pitcher Bobby Wahl are finalists for the award.
METAIRIE, La. (AP) — The New Orleans Saints say Chuck Muncie, a Pro Bowl running back with both the Saints and San Diego Chargers, has died at age 60. Muncie was the Saints first-round pick, third overall, out of California in 1976. He played four-and-a-half seasons in New Orleans before being traded in 1980 to San Diego, where he finished his nine-year NFL career.
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Despite the loss of seven starters to the NFL, LSU defensive coordinator John Chavis is sounding confident about the 2013 football season. Chavis told reporters this week he believes the first 11 defensive players LSU puts on the field will be as good as any in the country.
DETROIT (AP) — Miguel Cabrera homered, Doug Fister pitched seven impressive innings and Andy Dirks gave the Tigers a lift for a second straight night in Detroit's 6-2 victory over the Houston Astros on Tuesday. Dirks hit a grand slam in Monday's 7-2 win over Houston, and a night later he capped a three-run fifth with a tiebreaking double.
