AUBURN, Ala. (AP) — Auburn has hired Clint Myers from Arizona State as softball coach. Myers, whose hiring was announced on Friday, led Arizona State to national titles in 2008 and 2011 and to the Women's College Series seven times in eight seasons.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — UAB athletic director Brian Mackin believes fans will see much improved football and basketball teams next season. The Blazers went through some growing pains in the first seasons under football coach Garrick McGee and basketball coach Jerod Haase in 2012.

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (AP) — The Atlanta Falcons have signed cornerback Robert Alford, a second-round pick from Southeastern Louisiana. Alford was the second of two cornerbacks selected by the Falcons in the draft. First-round pick Desmond Trufant remains unsigned.

BROOKLYN, Mich. (AP) — Carl Edwards has topped qualifying for the first time this season with a lap of 202.452 mph at Michigan International Speedway on Friday. Edwards was given the pole in May at Talladega as well, but that was because qualifying was rained out and the field was set by practice speeds. He's second in the Sprint Cup standings.
