Here is the latest Georgia sports from The AP
ATLANTA (AP) — Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez says "barring any setbacks" Brandon Beachy will make his first start of the season during Tuesday's day-night doubleheader against the Mets. Recovering from elbow ligament-replacement surgery in June last year, Beachy gave up three runs — two earned — three hits and four walks in three innings Thursday for Triple-A Gwinnett at Rochester. He is 2-1 with a 3.27 ERA in five minor league injury rehabilitation starts.
ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — Georgia freshman cornerback Reggie Wilkerson is facing major surgery on his right knee and will miss the 2013 season. Wilkerson, from Ocala, Fla., enrolled at Georgia in January and injured his knee in voluntary practices with his teammates this week. He had a procedure on Friday to repair the meniscus in his right knee and will have a second surgery to reconstruct his anterior cruciate ligament.
FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (AP) — The Atlanta Falcons have signed cornerback Robert Alford, a second-round pick from Southeastern Louisiana. Alford was the second of two cornerbacks selected by the Falcons in the draft. First-round pick Desmond Trufant remains unsigned.
BROOKLYN, Mich. (AP) — Carl Edwards has topped qualifying for the first time this season with a lap of 202.452 mph at Michigan International Speedway on Friday. Edwards was given the pole in May at Talladega as well, but that was because qualifying was rained out and the field was set by practice speeds. He's second in the Sprint Cup standings.
