Federal judge dismisses lawsuit over hazing claim
GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) — A judge has dismissed a federal lawsuit that accused Picayune school officials of violating a high school baseball player's rights by failing to protect him from a hazing incident.
Chief U.S. District Judge Louis Guirola Jr. dismissed the federal claims and returned the lawsuit to Pearl River County Circuit Court, where the lawsuit was first filed.
The lawsuit was filed by Jeffrey Dixon Sr. and Amy Dixon, parents of 15-year-old Jeffrey Dixon Jr. The teen was struck in the chest April 19, 2011, before the Picayune Memorial High School baseball team was to play a game against Lumberton High.
The sun Herald reports (http://bit.ly/17oXXfv ) the court found no evidence school officials were aware of a pregame hitting ritual except for that incident and another that occurred Jan. 29, 2011.
