Britain's Farah eases to victory in 5,000 meters
GATESHEAD, England (AP) — Olympic champion Mo Farah convincingly won the men's 5,000 meter race Saturday to gain maximum points for Britain at the European Team Championships.
The 5,000- and 10,000-meter gold medalist waited until the final lap before powering away from the rest of the field to finish in 14 minutes, 10 seconds.
Britain finished the first half of the two-day event in third place, totaling 181 points.
Germany leads with 195 and Russia is second with 194.
The European Team Championships meet is the successor to the European Cup, with one athlete from each of Europe's 12 top-performing countries competing in each event.
