MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — A federal judge has denied former Auburn basketball player Varez Ward's request to enter a pretrial diversion program in his point shaving trial. Ward's attorney, Everett Wess, said Wednesday U.S. District Judge Keith Watkins denied the request.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — The Southeastern Conference has named Mark Whitworth to the newly created position of associate commissioner for men's basketball. The SEC announced the appointment on Wednesday for Whitworth, who has worked for the league for 25 years. He had been associate commissioner for external affairs, serving as the liaison with the men's basketball coaches and working with the SEC's media partners.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel, South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney and Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron will represent their teams at Southeastern Conference media days. The league on Wednesday released the roster of players attending the three-day event in Hoover starting next Tuesday.

MIAMI (AP) — Giancarlo Stanton hit a two-run double Wednesday to end a 10-game RBI drought, and the Miami Marlins broke a five-game losing streak by beating Atlanta 6-2. Stanton had been in a 3-for-26 slump before he put the Marlins ahead in their four-run first inning against Paul Maholm.
