Perfect Scherzer goes for 14...Froome holds Tour lead...Franchitti leads the pack


DETROIT (AP) — Detroit's Max Scherzer can still equal the 14-0 start of the 1986 season by Roger Clemens when he takes the mound tonight against Texas. Scherzer is 4-0 with a 3.35 earned run average lifetime against the Rangers.

LYON, France (AP) — Italian cyclist Matteo Trentin has won the hilly 14th stage of the Tour de France in a perfectly-timed sprint finish. Overall leader Chris Froome and the other main contenders finished several minutes back of Trentin, but Froome maintained his two-minute, 28 second lead.

TORONTO (AP) — Dario Franchitti (fran-KEE'-tee) starts from the pole today in the first of two weekend IndyCar races in Toronto. Franchitti will start beside pole-sitter Scott Dixon for Sunday's race through the 1.75 mile street course.

WATERLOO, Ontario (AP) — Catriona Matthew takes a 3-shot lead over Angela Stafford into today's third round of the Manulife Financial LPGA Classic. Top-ranked Inbee Park starts the day five shots back as she attempts to capture her fourth straight tournament win.

INVERNESS, Scotland (AP) — Phil Mickelson is still on the course in the third round of the Scottish Open but has pulled to within a shot of the lead. Mickelson is using the event as a tune-up for next week's British Open.
