DARWIN, Australia (AP) — The Darwin Cup has been canceled after a jockey died following a fall on Monday.

Darwin Turf Club chairman Brett Dixon says Simone Montgomerie fell from her mount, Riahgrand, and sustained "traumatic injuries" near the finish of the sixth race.

She was treated by doctors at the scene before being taken by ambulance to Royal Darwin Hospital in northern Australia.

Dixon says "it's with great regret that we were advised by the family that Simone passed away shortly after arriving at the hospital."

The last three races at the meet, including the featured Darwin Cup, were canceled.
