NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — Caroline Wozniacki became the first seeded player to make it to the quarterfinals of the New Haven Open, beating Karin Knapp 6-1, 7-5 on Wednesday.

The Danish star is trying for her fifth title in the six years she has played in New Haven. Her lone loss came in last year's semifinals, when she had to retire with a knee injury.

Top-seeded Sara Errani fell 7-5, 6-1 earlier Wednesday to Russia's Ekaterina Makarova. Errani, ranked No. 5 in the world, was the fifth of the tournament's eight seeds to lose in the first two rounds of the tournament.

Makarova will play Romanian Simona Halep in the quarterfinals.

Halep dropped her first set Wednesday but bounced back for a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 win over Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain.
