SMART Plant Improvements To Create New Jobs

One of the largest employers in Luverne is planning to add a few more jobs within the next year.
Â
The SMART Plant is expanding its facility and making improvements to prepare for a new car line, and the General Manager of the plant says he hopes these improvements will allow the company to hit a new record by employing a total of over 700 people within the next year.
Â
A steel stamping press at The SMART Plant takes nearly 30 people to operate it, and because the Hyundai supplier is expanding its facility, the General Manager says he will be looking to hire employees to operate new machines.Â
Â
“Right now we’re looking at possibly 25 to 30 new jobs, that’s what the plan is. Hopefully we’ll create more, but we’re certain right now it will be that amount,” says General Manager, Gary Sport.Â
Â
And construction for the plant improvements has already begun. The future site for new production lines will produce parts for the new Hyundai Sonata. Employees say they are excited about what the improvements will do for the community.Â
Â
“A lot of people have been laid off from different jobs, and it will help us a whole lot in this community, and not only in this community, in the Troy community too,” says Michael Griffin, a SMART Plant employee.
Â
Sport says they will be looking to hire people with some technical skills, who are hard working, and looking to learn a new trade.Â
Â
Construction is set to be complete by the end of January.Â
