Victim’s Family Reflects On One Year Since Hostage Standoff

Next Wednesday marks one year since Jimmy Lee Dykes stormed Charles Poland Junior’s bus-killing Poland, grabbing a young child and holding him hostage in a Dale County bunker for nearly a week.Â
Â
Poland’s wife and one of his children sat down to talk about the past year without him. They say they are taking it one day at a time and are determined to not reopen the door of the horror surrounding his murder, instead cherish each day and remember the years they had together.

Jan Poland, Charles Poland’s wife said, “Never let a day go bye that you don’t tell him you love him. Never let a day. If you have children…never let a day go by that you don’t love that child. Or those children. Because you never know it could be the last time you get a chance to do it.”
Â
As for the 21 children on the bus that witnessed Mr. Poland’s murder, Dale County Superintendent Donny Bynum says they are progressing with individual and group therapy.Â
Â
A special remembrance ceremony will be held next Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the Dale County High School. The public is invited to attend.Â
