Emergency Officials Preparing For Probable Winter Storm

Officials from the Montgomery city and county Emergency Management Agency are speaking out about the probable winter weather and what measures are being taken to keep people safe.

“We’re expecting, like I said, two to three inches of snow.”

The forecast calls for snow and EMA director Calvin Brown says officials are preparing for ice as well.

“We’re expecting some of that snow to turn into ice Wednesday afternoon,” he says.

The Alabama Department of Transportation has sand trucks ready to treat roadways. And other city and county officials will be working around the clock to ensure safety. Director of Public Safety Chris Murphy says all agencies are on board.

“The police and fire are prepared with their vehicles,” he says. “They’ll also be the eyes and ears to know what roads may be icing over and what conditions are.”

Some Montgomery residents tell us because they have to work, they’re preparing to drive on slick roads.

“I haven’t done it in a while so I’m cautious, very cautious,” says Bryce Thompson. “I usually stick to surface roads or stay off the interstate.”

Commissioner Reed Ingram says he’s encouraging people to say off the roads unless absolutely necessary.

“I’m asking everybody…I know it’s going to be pretty if we get snow, it’s monumental, it’s great but do not get out there and ride in it,” he says.

The Salvation Army, the Red Cross, and the EMA Emergency Operations Center will all open as shelters and warming stations. The Salvation Army is open now and will remain open 24/7 and the EMA center will open Tuesday at 4AM.

Officials are warning residents to be careful as they heat their homes…because of the number of fires in the past few weeks and also reminding you to bring your pets inside.
