Veteran Sheriffs Retiring This Year
Some familiar names will be missing from the ballot when you go to vote this year.
Â
A number of long time sheriffs have decided to retire and not seek re-election.Â
Â
Many of these men have been in office for about 20 years.Â
Â
They’ve decided it’s time to pass the torch to the next generation, including Sheriff David Warren of Macon County, who announced his decision today.Â
Â
Sheriff David Warren has announced his plans to retire after this year.
Â
He’s one of the county’s longest serving sheriffs, but he says after 20 years he’s ready to spend more time with his grandchildren.
Â
“Nobody knows like you when it’s time to move on. When it’s time to turn it over to younger more capable hands. Along with that go my prayers with whomever heads this department,” said Warren.Â
Â
But Warren isn’t the only veteran sheriff not returning in 2015.
Â
He’s joining the ranks of DT Marshall of Montgomery county, Herbie Johnson of Autauga county, James Hood of Perry County, and Charles West of Crenshaw County, all of whom won’t be running for re-election.
Â
Sheriff Bill Franklin of Elmore county has been serving since 1991 and he plans to continue if he’s re-elected. Franklin says things will be very different without those men. Working together with his fellow law officers happens all the time.Â
Â
“The people that steal, the people that deal dope, we don’t have a wall around elmore county, so they’re naturally going to go into other counties. So it’s a paramount issue being able to get along with and have good inter-governmental relations with those other counties,” said Franklin.
Â
“The surrounding sheriff’s, there’s a motto with the alabama sheriffs association that no sheriff stands alone. And they have proven that beyond any shadow of a doubt,” said Warren.Â
