Troy University Students Help With Free Tax Site

It’s tax season. For many that means worrying about forms and how much money you are going to get back or owe.Â
Â
The free tax site at the Pike County Extension Office is up and running for the third straight year. They mainly serve people with income of $52,000 and under.
Â
For the first time, Troy University accounting students are helping out while getting college credit. The students along with a tax professional help with tax returns through tax season.Â
Â
Last year this site alone saved the community $8,600 in tax prep fees.So far they have done 80 returns in just a few weeks.Â
Â
Curtis Potts, a Troy resident said, “You can get your taxes done and not have to pay anything. That’s 40 dollars I can save towards something else, maybe a light bill or whatever so it’s a positive thing.”
Â
The sites are sponsored by the Alabama Asset Building Coalition and the IRS.
