State Department of Education Takes Control of Selma City Schools

From the West Alabama Newsroom– The State Department of Education is now running Selma City Schools — and is already making changes.

State officials placed Superintendent Gerald Shirley and administrators — Wanda McCall and Mamie Solomon on leave. They also met with other school officials and explained the focus of the intervention.

The state decided to intervene in the school system — after an investigation uncovered sexual and academic misconduct — and school leaders failed to properly respond.
