LOCAL BARBERSHOP ‘CUT IT OUT’

Former Montgomery Fire Inspector Johnny George knows the importance of getting in front of a dangerous situation. Now as owner of Barbershop of Montgomery he’s managing a different kind of situation – black men’s health. Cut It Out Men’s Health Initiative brought out more than 100 people on Saturday, February 22, 2014 from 8 a.m. until noon. The event addressed devastating impact of smoking, drinking, lack of physical exams, poor diet, exercise and more on African American men head on. The Black ‘HIS story‘ event provided men who have been impacted by various health issues a platform to share their story; while compelling others the opportunity to speak with onsite medical professionals and receive free screenings. “Most black men won‘t go to the doctor for preventive care but instead wait until their health has spiraled out of control!” George is hoping the effort will give black men an opportunity to address behaviors that are impacting their life span in an environment where men typically gather and feel safe talking about all kinds of issues. Additionally, doctors, dentists and other medical professionals addressed topics such as Cardiovascular Health, Prostate Cancer, Hepatitis C, Hypertension, Oral Health, Diet and Exercise. The forum also allowed space for questions and answers with the following and more: o

Dr. Allen Dunlap and Virginia College Students o

Dr. Kevin Johnson, DDS Central Alabama Veteran Health Care System o

Mr. Earnest Hale, Jr. Eureka Financial Group – Affordable Life and Healthcare o

Mr. Ezekiel Smith Weight Management – Bfreechallenge/Stand Up to Obesity o
