Ellen Brooks retired from her position as Montgomery County District Attorney after serving in the position for more than 21 years.

Brooks says she kept her sudden retirement under wrap because she wanted to protect her staff but says now is the time to step down

“While I have tears…there are tears of sadness to say goodbye.”

Brooks was very emotional while talking about her departure as Montgomery County District Attorney. She’s been with the DAs office fore more than 36 years serving in different roles. She tells us retirement has been on her mind ever since she’s been eligible for it but says she believes now was the right time.

“We didn’t just wake up this morning and say we were going to do this,” she says. “But I’m comfortable despite my tears of saying goodbye. It’s the right thing to do. It’s the right time.”

Governor Robert Bentley appointed Daryl Bailey to replace Brooks. Bailey has been with the District Attorney’s office since 1997 and has formerly served as the Chief Deputy District Attorney. He tells us his biggest challenge will be transitioning into his new role.

“I’ll still keep cases and try cases but a lot of administrative functions that come along with being the District Attorney I see as the difference.”

Brooks retirement is making waves across the state. Dallas County District Attorney Michael Jackson calls Brooks a legend and says Bailey will have to step up to the plate.

“We’ve done a lot of things together,” he says. “I enjoyed working with her. Of course he has big shoes to fill but I’m sure he’ll do a good job.”

Brooks agrees, saying Bailey is prepared for the job.

“It’s a little bittersweet telling people goodbye,” Brooks explains. “It’s been a huge part of my life but I’m also very privileged to know that it’s in great hands.”

Daryl Bailey will fill out the rest of Ellen Brooks term and will have to run for the position in 2016.
