Education Budget Exceeds Republicans’ Cap Law
Alabama’s Republican governor and some Republican legislators are looking at maneuvering around a law they got enacted after taking control of the Legislature from Democrats.
The education budget proposed by Gov. Robert Bentley spends $92 million more than the cap in the rolling reserve act. Bentley says some of the things he proposed, including a 2 percent raise for teachers, would not be affordable without going above the cap.
The education budget approved by the Senate Thursday evening goes more than $23 million above the cap. The Senate deleted Bentley’s 2 percent raise and replaced it with a one-percent bonus. Committee Chairman Trip Pittman says the Senate’s version is not as high above the cap as the governor’s version.
The House minority leader, Democrat Craig Ford, called the spending hypocrisy.
