Alabama’s political history is full of downright crazy campaigns. We look at three of them, starting with the 1964 presidential election. Lyndon Johnson was in the White House, but he wasn’t on Alabama’s ballot. In the 1986 governor’s race, the Democratic Party debacle between Bill Baxley and Charlie Graddick led fed-up voters to elect the unknown Guy Hunt, who became the first Republican governor since Reconstruction. On election night 2002, voters went to bed not knowing if Democratic Governor Don Siegelman had been re-elected or if Congressman Bob Riley would be heading to the Governor’s Mansion. A controversy over votes in Baldwin County would keep Alabamians from knowing the outcome for a week.
