ASU President Gwendolyn Boyd Gives Update

 We caught up with Alabama State University President Gwendolyn Boyd  to ask her about a lawsuit recently filed against the school as well the state of the university.

President Boyd has said she wants to take the university in a more positive direction and make changes but it seems like there are still some very real issues that need to be addressed.

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, or SACS, has issued a warning against Alabama State University. The university is in hot water with the accrediting agency for failing to comply with standards related to the board of trustees, governance, financial stability and title four funding. Alabama State University President Gwendolyn Boyd says she wants to make things right. 

“Whatever it is that they tell us to do, we will do it,” she says. “We haven’t received that yet. So whatever they tell us to do, we will do it.” 

Last week, the attorney of a professor suing ASU for discrimination spoke exclusively to Alabama News Network about the alleged abuse. 

“He has been told time and time again, why are you here?” Attorney Wayne Sabel explains. “In effect, white people are unable to teach African American students.”

Dr. John Garland says he’s been the target of discrimination because of his ethnicity and his sexual orientation. But when we asked Boyd for her reaction to the lawsuit, she was tight lipped.

“Because I can’t speak on it because it’s a current lawsuit,” she says.
