Successful Peach Crop for Chilton County ‘s Peach Jam Jubilee
It’s that time of year when music and the smell of peaches fill the warm, summer air.
It’s Chilton County’s 10th annual Peach Jam Jubilee.
And these folks wouldn’t miss it.
“If I want peach ice cream, I’m coming to Clanton,” said vendor Sylvia Chaffin.
You can have your fill of peach ice cream… Peach bread… peach preserves… And everything peach in between.
But farmers will tell you it took a lot of work to get these peaches to be what they are today.
In February, we toured Durbin Farms.
While the cold winter was beneficial, a late freeze after a warm up would have been devastating.
So when the cold weather threatened their crops, they took action.
“Flying the helicopters, doing the wind machines, burning piles and coals. We knew that we could save them. We knew that we would have a crop. And it turned out a lot better than what we thought it would,” said Durbin Farms Owner Danny Jones.
But they say that’s all a part of the industry.
“Last year we were running 3 weeks behind schedule, the year before that we were running 2 weeks ahead, so it’s every year you fight a battle. That’s a part of farming,” said Jones.
But you can now rest assured everyone is enjoying the true fruits of their labor.
“I love it. We come here often. We came to Peach Park last weekend,” said Chaffin.
“We’re going to try to have some funnel cakes, peaches, mingle with some fellas here in Chilton County and have a good time,” said first time Jubilee attender Jim Moon.
