Police Target Drunk Drivers This Weekend, AAA Offering Free Rides

It’s the 4th of July holiday weekend, meaning more cars will be on the roadways. Law enforcement officers will be working all weekend to keep those roadways safe.

AAA projects that 41 million Americans will travel for the Fourth of July holiday. Eight out of ten of them will be hitting the road. Because of the increase in traffic, law enforcement agents say they’re working around the clock to keep roadways safe.

Authorities are also encouraging you to call them if you suspect someone may be under the influence and driving. It just may save someone’s life.

There is some criteria for the Tow to Life Program:

1. You have to be with your vehicle when they come get you

2. Your vehicle has to be operational

3. They have to take you home. AAA will not take you to another bar or another party

The number to call is 800-AAA-HELP..ask for the Tow for Life Program

“We’re going to be looking for these characters,” Montgomery County Chief Deputy. “We’re going to be looking for those people who are out there driving aggressive, people who are out here drinking and driving.”

City and state officials will be targeting speeders, those not wearing seat belts, and drunk drivers. Montgomery County District Attorney Daryl Bailey says everyone should be aware of their surroundings on the roadways.

“Drunk driving is something that people of all ages do unfortunately,” he says. “So this message needs to be carried across the community and drivers who don’t even consume alcohol need to be aware of it because they need to be on the watch for those who are out there driving drunk.”

Officials are encouraging you to make a plan ahead of time, instead of waiting until after you’ve had a drink. AAA is offering a public service that will take you and your car home. It’s called Tow for Life.

“They will get your name and your location and will send a tow truck to get you and your vehicle and take you home safely,” says Clay Ingram.

Ingram is a spokesman for AAA Alabama. He says Tow for Life will take you and your car home for free, up to ten miles from where you’re picked up. A charge per mile will apply to anything further.

“It’s just to help those people who find themselves unexpectantly in a situation where they need a ride to get home safely,” he explains. “And we feel like if we keep one impaired driver off the road the whole weekend, then it’s more than worth the effort.”
