Back to School Shoppers Hit the Stores for Tax Free Weekend

The tax free weekend is here. On this sales tax holiday, you can stock up on school supplies and save some money at the same time. Many stores are adding extra discounts to keep shoppers coming in. They say people are taking advantage of the savings.

Beverly Larkin is shopping for six. It’s a back to school list she says will cost her hundreds of dollars. When it comes time to hit the stores, she has one goal.

“Save all the money that you can,” Larkin said.

Sue Fletcher says she puts off back to school shopping until this weekend.

“I think it’s an excellent time to shop because you can get your 10 percent off, which takes care of the taxes, it’s just perfect, you know it saves you a lot of money when you’ve got school supplies to buy, school clothes, we just think it’s the best time to buy,” Fletcher said.

On the tax free list, you’ll find traditional back to school supplies like notebooks, pens and pencils. You can also save on clothing and electronics. That brings out some customers who aren’t shopping for school, but do want a tax break on big ticket items.

“It’s nice to get to the checkout and you don’t have that 10 percent added to it,” said Robert Dunn.

Smaller, independent stores like Burgundy at Eastdale Mall are also hoping for bigger crowds.

“It’s been kinda slow the last few months, but hopefully this tax free weekend brings out, you know, people,” said Choung Kim.

She says this weekend makes a difference.

“When the time comes to look for school uniforms, stuff like that, they do come out to purchase you know, school uniforms, so it is a help to us and to them too.”

You can get a tax break on eligible items through Sunday.
