National Night Out Brings Communities Closer Together

Communities across the country came together to fight crime.

It’s all a part of National Night Out.

It’s one of the biggest outreaches for law enforcement every year.

There were parties all across the river region.

It’s not every day you see so many fire trucks, police cars and boats all in one place.

That’s just a small part of what national night out means for law enfocement.

“It’s a party with a purpose. We want people to be pumped up. We want you to be fired up so when you go home and you see those suspicious vehicles, call! I always tell people it’s not like it’s a bother, it’s not like you’re disturbing law enforcement,” said Montgomery County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Derrick Cunningham.

It’s not just getting to know law enforcement though. Part of the program is to get people to meet their neighbors and build a stronger community.

“It’s good to get to know your neighbors from different communities and just enjoying with your neighbors all the fun,” said Deborah Blevins, who has a family in Pike Road.

Chief Derrick Cunningham says the biggest part of the event is to get people thinking about safety. With all the officers out to meet and greet, it has some feeling very safe.

“It really does because the sheriff always comes out and gives you some tips and do the little kit for the kids in case they get kidnapped. I think that’ll be a good thing to have,” said Blevins.

“I feel like they’re my family or something. I feel like it’s great, that everyone is coming together and having a good time,” said Makiyah Sears.

Many of the areas around here have only been doing national night out for a few years, but the idea has been around for about 30.

National Night Out extends beyond just the US. It takes place in parts of canada and military bases across the globe.
