Is College Worth The Price?

College students across the state are returning to campus this week.

But with the unemployment in the state rising to 7% and student loan debt at an all time high, is it worth it?

It’s not cheap to go to college.

It can be difficult to cover the cost of tuition, let alone books and other expenses.

But economic analyst Jeff Bates says it’s one of the safest investments you can make, especially in Alabama

“There’s about roughly a 25 thousand dollars a year difference between what a high school graduate versus a college graduate makes. So over a 40 year lifetime, that’s over a million dollars. Even with college costing 50 thousand dollars, one hundred thousand dollars, you’re still getting a very good return,” said Bates.

Students on campus at Alabama State and Auburn Montgomery are already thinking about finding work, even though some are in their freshman year, like Brandon Watkins who’s majoring in psychology.

“It’s something to think about every day. Actually my parents they both work in that same field, so I’m planning on taking my degree and go that way with my parents,” said Watkins.

“I’m looking to get a job sometime during the fall semester of next year where before that in the summer I’m looking to find an internship and hopefully a more secure job,” said Corey Harris, AUM student.

“I’m very anxious but I’m also very scared because I don’t know what jobs are going to be available when I graduate so I’m very anxious to see what happens with my future,” said ASU student Lasaundra Ingersoll.

Bates says a lot of that future depends on what field you go into. Job fields like law are paying less and less. But others are on the rise.

“Obviously the medical field. Anything with med tech, biotech, computer science, accounting. One are that obviously that has had a growth spurt is our government. When you think that our government grows every single year that means there are more and more jobs,” said Bates.
