The three boys who found an abandoned baby in Montgomery earlier this month will be recognized at tomorrow’s city council meeting. Tonight, we speak with them and their parents about  the day they found the baby and how they feel about being recognized by city leaders.

The boys were walking through from Lanier High School to a nearby gym..but they stopped when they heard a baby. Their quick thinking has many praising the way they handled a delicate situation.

Three teenage boys will be recognized at Tuesday’s city council meeting for finding, and potentially saving a 5-month-old baby’s life. Kenterious Singleton, Deonta Martin and Darious Johnson found the baby in front of St. James Missionary Baptist Church. The baby was not harmed but in bad shape.

“It had red spots all over it, just horrible,” says Martin.

“He was in a lot of pain, he was crying loud,” Singleton explains.

“At first we didn’t know what it was, the other boy was like, it’s a ghost,” Johnson adds.

But the boys stopped once they heard the baby’s cries.

“We waited for like ten minutes to see if anybody would come and nobody appeared so we went to Bellingrath Middle School,” says Martin.

“I knew we had to find the closest place for help and we saw the school was open so we went there,” says Singleton.

Montgomery City Councilman David Burkette says he’s proud of the young boys quick thinking.

“You’re talking about three teenagers  that did a heroic thing in many opinions and I had people asking me to invite them down to City Hall so everybody could recognize them.”

…which is where the boys will be Tuesday night. Darious tells us his parents are proud.

“They were happy, they were surprised that I found one.”

Kenterious’ dad and Deonta’s mom say they too will be at the council meeting.

“They did an excellent job,” says Catrinna Barber, Deonta’s mother. “I’m very proud of them. They did the right thing.”

“I try to teach them the right things to do in life and I was very proud of them,” says Kenyard Singleton.

But the boys say it’s not really about the recognition.

“I’m just proud to be honored but it was really about the baby, that’s all that mattered,” Singleton says.

Montgomery police have charged the parents of the baby with contributing to the dependency of a child.
