Airing of the Quilts Exhibition
Gee’s Bend Raised invites you to Airing of the Quilts Exhibition on Saturday, September 13 from 9 am to 3 pm. On display will be quilts from the collection of M. Virginia Pettaway and others and Wrought iron sculptures and other exhibits. Airing of the quilts was a tradition of the women in Gee’s Bend. They hung their quilts out on clotheslines once a year to air out, which was an unspoken way to show off their quilts to friends and neighbors. It also presented an opportunity to display their artistic and creative talents and be judged by a jury of their peers. This year’s airing of the quilts will be held on the homestead of the late Sweet T. and Reverend Gilbert Pettway. They were both pillars in this tight-knit community, but Sweet T. also made her mark in the quilting community. This year wear are honoring her and her quilting connections to this creative community.
