Pets and Heat Safety

The River Region is under a heat advisory for the next few days as temperatures soar to triple digits.

It’s important to not only take precautions for yourself… But also your pets.
Dr. Louis Gotthelf is a veterinarian at the Animal Hospital of Montgomery.
He says he has seen his fair share of pets suffering from heat exhaustion over the years. He says to make sure they aren’t out too long in the hot sun and have plenty of water to drink.
But if they do get too hot, here’s what you need to do:

“Just take a water hose and try to cool them down as much as possible. If you have ice packs or even just ice, you can put ice under the armpits, between back legs, around the neck where the blood vessels will cool the body quicker and get them to a vet as quickly as you can,” said Gotthelf.

Dr. Gotthelf also says be sure to place your pet’s water bowl in the shade and make sure the bowl stays in the shade as the sun moves throughout the day.
