Old Elam Cemetery Designated As Historic Site

 

A ceremony was held today to recognize the Old Elam Cemetery as a historic site. 

 

The church and cemetery were different from most in the 1800’s.

 

It was integrated well before the Civil war. So slaves, confederate soldiers and successful businessmen and women are all buried together. 

 

Members of the church hope this marker will attract people to learn about their history. 

 

Pastor David Ellington said, “Churches have sprung off of Old Elam it was originally belonging to slave owners and they passed it on to the slaves and there are some graves out there from many many years past and we just wanted to let Montgomery know and all the people that past by this way, let them know  that this is a historic place.”

 

This is Montgomery County’s 22nd site to be added to the Alabama Historic Cemetery Register.
