How Should Schools Handle Fights Between Students?

Two Lee High School students are facing criminal charges after a fight is caught on camera and goes viral. Now parents are speaking out.

The fight broke out off school property shortly after class. School officials say they take fights between students seriously. There are a wide range of possible punishments for fighting, from suspension to expulsion. School officials would not go into detail about what punishments the students in these case will face, but two are charged with disorderly conduct after being arrested by the Montgomery Police Department.

But not all parents think police should be involved in fights between students.

“I don’t believe the schools can handle it anymore. It used to be they could, but I think it’s got to be a combo of both. I think they’re gonna have to work together,” said Jim Cunkel, a former Lee High School student who now has a granddaughter nearing high school age.

Jeremy Jackson, another Montgomery parent, disagrees. “i don’t think they should be involved in a school fight. They should let the parents and the teachers handle it,” he said.

This is not the only fight between Montgomery students this year. Another fight happened at Lanier High School. It was also caught on camera. Police and school officials are still working to identify the students involved.
