Auburn/Alabama Have Quarterback Dilemmas

It’s finally college football season and both Alabama and Auburn have their first games tomorrow. Both teams, however, have interesting quarterback situations this year. So, how could tomorrow’s matchups affect the position for the rest of the season?

Both Auburn Head Football Coach Gus Malzahn and Alabama’s Nick Saban have said who will start at quarterback in tomorrow’s games but that doesn’t mean that same person will start for the season. We wanted to know what you thought of both dilemmas.

Alabama senior Blake Sims will start as quarterback for the Crimson Tide against West Virginia. Some say it’s been a long time coming for Sims, who served as both a running back and a backup quarterback to AJ McCarron. But Jacob Coker, a junior who last played at Florida State, could also see some playing time.  Sports Analyst John Longshore says Alabama will use the first few games to determine who will start for the rest of the season.

“Alabama has the luxury of their first three games,” he says. “They’re going to be huge favorites in these games so they’re going to have the opportunity to play both of these quarterbacks and there’s nothing like in-game experience.”

Montgomery’s Jeremy Johnson will start as quarterback for the Tigers over Nick Marshall, who ran into some trouble with the law several months ago when he was cited for marijuana possession. Longshore says  Malzahn is teaching Marshall a lesson.

“Obviously Nick Marshall had an off the field issue and Gus Malzahn wants to punish him and this is how he’s going to do it, keeping him out of the game at first against Arkansas, not starting him.

Both dilemmas have fans talking. Alabama fan Jack Daffin says he hopes the Tide will have a starting quarterback soon.

“I think they’ll be fine with West Virginia but as long as they get it settled before a big SEC game, they’ll be fine.”

Cherron Pettiway says she trusts Nick Saban.

“Nick knows exactly what he’s doing,” she says. “We’re going to win this thing.”

Auburn fan Chris Knox tells us he understands why Nick Marshall is being benched.

“When it comes to being penalized for what he’s done with the drugs, I think he should sit out because it sends a bad message to the teammates if they let him play.”
