Troy Moving To Become More Bike Friendly

Studies show Alabama ranks as one of the worst states for being bicycle friendly. But the City of Troy is trying to change that.

More than 80 signs like this one are now up along designated streets. The streets are on a devised bike map.

The map took the city, university and engineers about a year to plan out and finalize.

Bike racks have also been put up outside of popular spots like downtown and city hall.

The city hopes this will make drivers more aware of their surroundings and promote a healthy lifestyle.

Jarred Smith, a bicyclist said, “It’s just going to make everything safer. Because bikers, with how many freshman and students there are the sidewalks are kind of cramped now and if we have no where else to go besides the road and if we were able to share the road just a little bit it would help us not hit pedestrians and cars not hit us.”

The streets with the “share the road” signs connect different areas of the city like downtown and the university.

City leaders are calling this phase one of becoming more bike friendly.
