New Middle School Building Could Save Lives

The city of Andalusia gives CBS 8 an exclusive look inside the new wing of it’s middle school.
It has several new features inside… And one of those features could save hundreds of lives.

On the outside this new building for Andalusia’s 7th and 8th graders it looks like your typical school,
But on the inside it’s a whole different story. This new wing has three state-of -the-art safe rooms for students to protect themselves during severe weather. Everything from 8 inch thick cement walls, Steel windows, and doors ready to take wind gusts up to 200 miles per hour.

“We can mimize risk and that’s what its about is trying to mimimize the chance that we’re gonna have catastrophic damage in out school as a result of incliment weather.” Said Superintendent Ted Watson.

Weather is what caused the tragedy at Enterprise High School back in 2007, when eight students were killed in an EF four tornado. Thats what school and city leaders say they had in mind when building this new wing.

Once the nearly four million dollar wing is complete, teachers will be bringing students from the middle school to the new building to get a feel for the new atmosphere.
