Montgomery Man Kills Self During Traffic Stop

State troopers say a Montgomery man fatally shot himself after being pulled over in a traffic stop in Wetumpka.

Troopers identified the man as 56-year-old Raymond Dawkins.

Troopers say the shooting occurred during a traffic stop about 9 p.m. Sunday near the Poarch Creek Indians’ casino on U.S. 231 in Wetumpka.

Authorities say a tribal police officer was nearby and assisted.

Troopers say the driver produced a gun and shot himself.

No shots were fired by the two officers and no one else was injured.

Dawkins was pronounced dead at the scene.

Trooper spokesman Steve Jarrett says a trooper noticed Dawkins because he was stopped at a green traffic light.

The State Bureau of Investigation Task Force is investigating the death.
