More Tasers on the Way for Selma Police Officers

From the West Alabama Newsroom–  The Selma City Council votes to buy more stun-guns for officers with the Selma Police Department.

The purchase means that soon every patrol officer on the police force will be equipped with a taser.

“Its always good to add another less lethal item to your arsenal,” said Selma Police Chief William Riley.

City leaders decided to buy tasers after a police officer shot and killed a man who charged at him with a hatchet  during a confrontation back in December of last year.

The incident sparked a controversy throughout the community about the use of deadly force.

“As police we come in contact with so many people. Many different situations and the last thing we want to do is use deadly force,” said Riley.

City officials say the tasers will help protect both citizens and police officers.

About half the police force already have stun guns.
