11 Million Prescribed AntiBiotics Unnecessary

More than 11 million  prescriptions for antibiotics written for children and teens every year may be unnecessary, according to a new study published in the journal “Pediatrics.”

Researchers found respiratory infections are a big culprit.

In their findings, bacteria was present in about 30% of childrens’ infections, but antibiotics were prescribed almost 60% of the time.

Doctors say tools are urgently needed to distinguish whether an infection is bacterial or viral.
